A Rare Chance to Train and Compete in Europe

Ciclismo Euskadi cycling camp has been created for cyclists of all ability levels to have a place to come and meet their training objectives. Whether your goal is to focus on your racing style, improve your fitness or live out the dream of training and racing in Europe, Ciclismo Euskadi is the cyclist's perfect getaway.

A good combination of climbs and flats, not to mention the scenery, make Vitoria an ideal spot for cyclists.

About Ciclismo Euskadi

Our cycling camp has a casual atmosphere where all ability levels of cyclists are welcome. We are geared towards training and racing cyclists, but that is not our sole focus. We also believe in enjoying the local wine, food, and culture.

If you are interested in attending a cycling camp and riding in a fantastic cycling region in Europe why not learn how to properly train for your favorite sport at the same time? Then you can return home with not only fantastic memories of riding around Spain's beautiful Basque country but also equipped with the knowledge to get the most out of your rides. Soon you'll be beating your friends up the climbs on the weekend rides or finishing at the top in those races that you once struggled to finish.

While many other camps offer room, board and racing, our camp has gained the advantage by offering both racing cyclist and recreational cyclist alike the opportunity to be treated as a pro cyclist. We do this by providing VO2 max tests, lactate analysis and blood work to each racing cyclist and all touring/recreational cyclists who so desire. We are the only camp that offers this specific testing.

VO2 max tests do little to tell a rider how they should train, but it is a great indicator of your potential. The key to determining a customized training program like we provide is in the lactate analysis. This tells our camps Sports Physiologist, Inigo, which specific areas a cyclist needs work on. There is no better way to design a training program for a cyclist.

Blood work is done to determine a rider's hematocrit, hemoglobin, and enzyme levels. The results of this test tell Inigo whether a rider is depleted from over or improper training.

The combination of these three tests allows Inigo to craft a training plan for each individual rider. All testing is done on the latest and most sophisticated equipment that is used by doctors of professional cycling teams. No training camp is going to transform a rider into a far better cyclist in 1 or 2 weeks. Our goal is to provide you with the tools and information you need to achieve your goals in cycling. No matter how big or small they are."

The Hotel - also used by such pro teams as ONCE when they race in the area.

Hotel/Meals

The camp's hotel is situated just outside Vitoria on the border of the scenic Gorbeia Nature Park. This is much more convenient for training because you are quickly out of town and surrounded by ideal training routes. Each room in the hotel has two double beds, private toilet/shower, and satellite TV with complete live coverage of all major cycling races. The Mapei and ONCE teams periodically stay at this hotel when attending races in the area.

Breakfast is a typical European continental breakfast consisting of croissants, toast, juice, and coffee. Lunch and dinner are very filling and come with two entrees, dessert, and coffee. Red table wine and bottled mineral water are also included in these meals. These meals are ideal for satisfying hungry appetites after a day of riding.

Each room will be shared with another rider or your non-cycling guest if one is coming with you. Individual rooms are available on a space available basis only for an extra $24/night.

Directly across the street from the hotel is a bus stop where you can catch a bus to Vitoria, San Sabastián, Bilbao, Madrid, Pamplona or virtually any other place you want to go. Transfers may be required to get to many cities.

Training Rides

Training rides are guided and leave from the hotel between 8:30am and 10:00am depending on the weather and the length of the ride we have planned for that day. Typical ride lengths range from 30-85 miles. Average pace of the rides varies depending on terrain and distance; typical average speeds are between 17-21 mph. The terrain is mostly rolling to hilly with short climbs ranging from 1 to 4 miles in length. Flat to gentle rolling terrain is found in the Alava Valley where we also so some riding. There is no guided ride planed for Mondays. This is a day for ground transfers to and from the airport and/or a recovery day for riders who choose to extend their stay.

Weather conditions can vary quite a bit in most of Europe. Anyone who has watched the Tour de France has probably noticed them riding in beautiful sunshine one day and cloudy cool conditions the next day. The Basque country is no exception. Normal conditions in this area are low to mid 80s with 1 or 2 cloudy days or mornings a week.

Clásicas

Image

These hugely popular and extremely well organized events are put on by large cycling clubs and are supposedly not competitive but a certain amount of friendly competition between clubs and riders is always present. These events are ideal for recreational racers and touring riders. The clásicas include aid stations with food and drinks, road marshals along the course, and placing. Prizes like medals and jerseys are awarded at these events depending on your placing.

Image

Taking part in a clásica is a great way to test yourself against your Basque cycling counterparts. They also serve as a great introduction for riders who think they may want to try racing in Europe but aren't sure of their ability yet. Ability levels of the riders in these events range from category 2 racers in the US to that of a fitness/touring rider.

The 2003 touring clásica calendar will be available on globeros.com (click on cicloturismo). If you will be staying with us over the weekend of July 5th, you will get the opportunity to ride in a large fully-supported Spanish clásica. Image The Clásica Jesús Loroño on July 5th is 106 miles with 7 climbs ranging from 2-5 miles in length. This is considered one of the most challenging clásicas in the Basque country. This clásica typically has up to 500 participants, which are split into two groups: one for faster and one for slower riders. Clásicas such as this one provide a great challenge for racers and touring riders alike. Proof of health insurance is required to enter the clásicas. A current health insurance card is valid proof. If you have a US domestic racing license from USA cycling or your state/region you should also bring it.

In 2002 our camp's riders made Basque TV and Radio as the first and only Americans in the Jesús Loroño clásica. The organizers and riders are always excited to have us show up at their events.
