Germany's road star, Hanka Kupfernagel won her second World Championship
Cyclocross title, once again confirming her versatility as a cyclist.
Kupfernagel beat home Dutch pair Corine Dorland and Daphny Van Den
Brand, with Ann Grande (USA) taking fourth and Laurence Leboucher
(Fra), fifth.
Kupfernagel took the lead early in the four lap (11.5 km) race,
putting 15 seconds into her nearest rivals very quickly. Although
she fell on the ice, she was able to continue at a less risky pace
and had over half a minute to spare at the finish.
"It was great to win last year, but as is well known it is harder
to defend the title. This is a huge success for me," said the German
Olympic silver medallist.
She also thought that the race was too short, being just 30 minutes
compared to 40 minutes last year. "For a World Championship that
is far too little. We should return to the old regulations," she
added.
