Team Saturn have notched up their fourth stage victory in the Tour de Snowy, after South Africa's Anke Erlank took out stage 4 in Thredbo today. Erlank benefited from the generosity of her teammate Anna Millward, who allowed her to escape in the last kilometre while being satisfied with second place (and more bonus seconds). In third place was Zinaida Stahurskaia, who is probably one of the biggest threats to Millward's lead over the next two days. The 69 riders left in the Tour de Snowy had scarcely an hour and a half's break before the start of stage 4, the renowned 35.2 kilometre Thredbo circuit race. Eight laps of a 4.4 kilometre circuit, including a steep, but mercifully short climb up Banjo Drive. Few riders wanted to attack early though, save for Jayco-VIS rider Jessica Amy, who dangled some 30 seconds in front of the peloton for 2 laps starting on lap 4.
With less than two laps to go, AIS rider Margaret Hemsley launched a spirited move, designed to "soften up the international riders for the next two days," according to AIS coach James Victor halfway up Banjo Drive. She had a small advantage on the final ascent, but Stahurskaia was motoring behind and brought the bunch back to the Australian.
This move was enough to put five riders into the lead: Stahurskaia, Millward, Hemsley, Kim Shirley and Rosalind Reekie-May. They had enough to stay away from the main peloton, although Millward's teammate Anke Erlank managed to bridge up to provide a leadout for Millward. As she pulled through hard inside the final kilometre, Millward sat up and allowed her to escape. The others were not willing to chase, and a surprised but elated Erlank crossed the finish line as the victor. "I'm satisfied that I actually got to win because the last lap was really hard," said Erlank. "Anna was in a little break of four riders and I was bridging up in the end and I was just pulling through to help Anna for the leadout but she just sat up." "Anna's absolutely my idol and I'm just so stoked to be on the team. I'm so happy today that it happened like this," she added. Four wins in four stages and the leader's jersey - it's hard to imagine how Saturn-Timex could have performed better on the opening two days of the Tour de Snowy. The next two stages will be different however, as there is some serious climbing. Tomorrow, the riders face 77 kilometres from Thredbo to Khancoban, including the category one climb of Scammell's Ridge (1020m) with the summit at 17 kilometres to go. On Tuesday is the feared Khancoban to Cabramurra stage, that finishes with a 10 kilometre climb up to Australia's highest city.
