The final stage of the Tour de Snowy has been taken out by 24 year old Autotrader.com rider, Sarah Ulmer. She was part of a four woman breakaway that managed to lap the field in the 30 kilometre criterium in Tumut. In second place was Jayco's Liz Tadich, who narrowly failed to beat the New Zealander as the two sprinted for the win, while third and fourth went to Sara Carrigan (AIS) and Roz Reekie-May (NZ) respectively. Saturn-Timex's Kim Bruckner had no trouble keeping Zinaida Stahurskaia in check, and took out the overall general classification. The stage was conducted in warm sunshine and clear blue skies, the perfect weather continuing as it has for the entire tour. 64 riders were left to contest the 25 lap event, and most were keen to get it over with. On the second lap, New Zealand rider, Rosalind Reekie-May went off the front, and she was marked by Sara Carrigan (AIS) and Sarah Ulmer (Autotrader.com). In hot pursuit was the morning's second place getter, Liz Tadich (Jayco-VIS), who caught the trio after a couple of laps.
Carrigan took out the first two cash sprints, while the other three were content to sit on her wheel. The bunch did not organise a chase, so the gap quickly grew to over a minute and the breakaways could see the tail end of the peloton at halfway. They lapped the field inside the final ten laps, but things became a little confusing when it was decided that the bunch would not sprint with three to go as is usual. Instead, the four riders were told to sprint ahead of the peloton which they managed to do. On the uphill run to the line, Tadich and Ulmer fought it out neck and neck. It seemed as though Tadich had won when she threw her bike on the line, but the photo finish revealed that Ulmer had got it. Two second places in two stages wasn't bad for the Jayco rider, but it could have been that little bit better. "It was a little bit confusing at the finish there. We were told that we were meant to be in the front of the bunch so we could fight it out just amongst the four of us...It was very satisfying for me and the team to win." Ulmer will be based in Ottawa (Canada), but will race mainly in America for her Autotrader.com team this year. The World Cup in Philly and the Hewlett-Packard Women's Challenge are her main goals for the year, although she will be racing in the Canberra and Hamilton World Cups over the next two weeks. The overall honours for the 2000 Tour de Snowy belonged to Kimberly Bruckner and the Saturn-Timex team. Bruckner climbed her way into an unbeatable position up to Cabramurra yesterday, and was a deserving and elated winner.
"I knew what I had to do - stay on Zinaida, and I had the utmost faith in Anna and Anke who were covering all the necessary breaks," she said. "We were pretty happy that something got away and let it go. Sometimes I'd get gapped and I'd come charging up to her on the hill, but I wasn't worried because she wouldn't get 1'30 in that time." "It's unbelievable. This is definitely my biggest win so far. This is my first year with Saturn and it's awesome to start out like this and have such awesome, amazing teammates. Now we've just got to go into the World Cup - we're going for Anna!" "Anna's such a good team leader - she's really our director on the road. She's so race-smart and so organised, it's perfect. We have our meetings in the morning and she says 'this is what you have to do' and if it works, it's fine. She showed me it worked As for team leader Anna, who led the race right up until the second last day and won the points jersey, can she ever win it? "It's possible, maybe one day. As long as they keep putting Cabramurra in there, I'm going to be at a disadvantage," she chuckled. The other classifications saw World Champion Zinaida Stahurskaia take second overall and the mountains jersey, while AIS rider Sara Carrigan was the best U23 rider.
